8. Biennale der Ostseeländer with the motto Children of the World referred to the Year of the Child proclaimed by the UN.

The 8. Biennale der Ostseeländer in 1979 also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Kunsthalle. Many country collections showed artists who had already participated in Rostock in 1969. The Biennale motto Children of the World referred to the Year of the Child proclaimed by the UN. Many introductory texts in the catalogue booklets emphasised the attempt not to limit this motto to the representation of children, but to consider the children's environment as a whole. Nevertheless, there were many illustrations among the exhibits, such as the graphics by the Finn Väino Rouvinnen. However, social problems such as unemployment - for example, in the large linocuts by Tapani Mikkonen - were also thematised. The range of graphic manuscripts from Finland was expanded by Kimmo Kaivanto's prints pointing to the emerging digital world.

With a portrait of the Icelandic painter and Biennale committee member Bragi Asgeirsson, the West German painter Hans Platschek showed the personal contacts and friendships that developed during the Biennale. The text on the Icelandic selection emphasised not only the desire to use art to convey what is typical of the country, but also the striving for further cultural exchange with the GDR.
