13th and last Biennale of the Baltic Sea Countries takes place in the Kunsthalle Rostock.

Since 1989, the management of the Kunsthalle Rostock had been in the hands of Dr. Luise Hartmann, who thus also assumed the position of secretary of the committee of the Biennale of the Baltic Sea States. The catalogue of the 13th Biennale of the Baltic Sea states contained quotations from the artists about the works they were showing, in addition to the details of the works. Only one artist each from Denmark, Finland and Sweden was sent to Rostock this year. The Danish artists' association commissioned the art historian Hanne Abildgaard to supervise the contribution, she accompanied the artist selected by the association, Niels Guttormsen, and wrote Denmark's contribution to the catalogue. She acted as a Danish committee member, travelled to Rostock and was also involved in the planning for the next Biennale. The committee of the Biennale of the Baltic Sea countries always met during the Biennale in Rostock, as the members accompanied the collections there.

Finland showed a beam sculpture created by Mauno Hartman for the city in 1989. The work, entitled Sculpture Rostock, filled the sculpture hall on the ground floor. Norway presented, among other artists, the tapestries of textile artist Marianne Magnus. The Polish selection focused on a style of art unique to the country, which Country Commissioner Alexandra Prokop described as "Theatrum" in the accompanying text. Although planning had already begun for the 14th Biennale of the Baltic Sea countries, the series of this international art exhibition of the Baltic Sea countries, Norway and Iceland ended with the political turnaround in the GDR.
