12. Biennale der Ostseeländer, Norwegens und Islands

  • Otto Dressler
The 12th Biennal of the Baltic Sea Countries was dominated by the theme of the environment.

For the 12th Baltic Biennial, the concept of the 11th Biennial of focusing the collections on a few artists with a greater insight into their work was retained. In the selection of the Federal Republic, two central themes confronted each other. Attention was drawn to the threat to nature posed by environmental pollution through catchwords such as "acid rain". In contrast, the sculptor Otto Dressler admonished the dangers of war and fascism with his peace objects. His impressive works won the prize at the Biennale of the Baltic States in 1987. The catalogue text of the Federal Republic referred to the exhibition Positionen shown in Berlin and Dresden in 1986, which introduced works from West Germany to a wider audience in the GDR.

The collections of Iceland and Norway addressed the traditionally deeply rooted theme of landscape, which also served as a basis for abstraction, and with it the emerging environmental awareness.
