4. Biennale der Ostseestaaten, Norwegens und Islands

Topic: Exhibitions
Periods:
  • 1971/07/10 — 1971/09/12
Sculpture strongly represented

Sculptors were strongly represented in all collections in 1971. The acquisitions from the 4th Biennale of the Baltic States are also mainly sculptures, along with a few graphics in the exhibition. All the works show exclusively human figures. In addition to everyday scenes such as fishermen from Iceland, there is also politically motivated content, as in the portrait of W.I. Lenin by Ludwig Engelhardt. A special feature of the Norwegian collection were medals by Hans Jacob Meyers from the coin cabinet of the University of Oslo. The Soviet collection in Rostock showed works from the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the Soviet Ministry of Culture, among others. Putting together works from such important collections for Rostock remained the exception. Nevertheless, the collections of the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of Poland were always looked after by the respective Ministry of Culture. Direct contact with the exhibiting artists remained the exception. In the preface to the 4. Biennale der Ostseestaaten, the emphasis on the desire for realistic works of art increased.
