7. Biennale der Ostseeländer with a Swedish collection created by women artists

The seventh Biennale was able to return to the title Biennale of the Baltic Sea Countries, which sounded less national than geographically unifying. Previously managed by the Baltic Sea Week Committee, the Association of Visual Artists (VBK) of the GDR and the Kunsthalle Rostock were responsible after the end of the Baltic Sea Week.

The motto published by the Biennale Committee in 1977 was Vom Sinn des Lebens (On the Meaning of Life). 118 artists with over 500 works of art accepted the invitation to Rostock.

Sweden showed a uniquely feminine collection and the majority of Norway's selection was also created by women artists.

According to the accompanying text, the GDR's selection was limited in 1977 by the artists' preparations for the VIII Art Exhibition in Dresden. Nevertheless, the selection from the GDR in particular showed a wide range of styles. Alongside works from the 1970s by Claus Weidensdorfer, there were works by Hermann Glöckner and Kate Diehn-Bitt from the 1930s. This recourse to already existing collection holdings of the Kunsthalle for the GDR collection remained an exception.

Hans Theo Richter's works were shown in this biennial alongside those of Armin Münch. This juxtaposition of teacher and student was an exciting recurring phenomenon of the Biennale and ran through all the country collections.
