2. Biennale der Ostseeländer, Norwegens und Islands

Topic: Exhibitions
Periods:
  • 1967/07/08 — 1967/08/06
In 1967 Iceland became part of the Biennale

The 2nd Biennial of the Baltic Sea countries also had to open again in the Museum of the City of Rostock in the building in August-Bebel-Straße, despite the already projected Kunsthalle Rostock. Holding the Biennale in an existing cultural-historical collection required great effort and reconstruction.

Although far from the Baltic Sea, Iceland now also participated in the Biennale of the Baltic Sea countries, Norway and Iceland. In 1967, almost twice as many works were acquired for the Kunsthalle's collection. This represents the importance and, consequently, the growing funds for acquisitions from the exhibition.

For the first time, the catalogue's preface clearly referred to the desire for realism in the artists' works, but with the restriction of allowing different artistic means and possibilities. For the first time, the works listed in the catalogue were accompanied by introductory texts by the exhibitors. The GDR collection included many works from the northern districts, thus setting a regional focus as a counterpoint to the country's art centres of Dresden, Leipzig and Berlin.

The international isolation of the GDR made the practical realisation of the biennials difficult. Bringing the works to Rostock via official transport was not possible due to the non-existent customs agreements. Special transports had to be organised for some of the Nordic collections as well as for those of the Federal Republic.
