5. Biennale der Ostseestaaten, Norwegens und Islands
- 1973/07/07 — 1973/09/23
World political events and the resulting diplomatic recognition of the GDR in 1973 increasingly influenced the Biennale. The Biennale's task of promoting contacts and paving the way for diplomatic recognition was fulfilled. The diplomatic contacts to the participating countries that had now been achieved simplified the organisational paths of the exhibition. However, the now fulfilled political purpose of the Baltic Sea Week threatened to dissolve the financial foundations of the show. Thus, Horst Zimmermann's emphasis on the future of the Biennale in the foreword to the catalogue seemed particularly important. In 1973, painting was dominantly represented in the GDR selection. According to the accompanying text, some works had been shown at the VII Kunstausstellung der DDR in Dresden.
A loan of Niels Lergaard's landscapes from the Louisiana Museum Denmark would probably have been impossible in 1971. Iceland was represented that year with works from the collection of the Icelandic Trade Union Confederation. The Norwegian collection showed works by Paul Gauguin's grandson, Paul René Gauguin, among others.
The political themes of the exhibition have also been preserved in the Kunsthalle's collection through acquisitions. In 1973, for example, large stocks of political poster art from Denmark entered the Kunsthalle collection alongside the large woodcut Sintflut by HAP Grieshaber.
The sculpture Sieben Stolze Schwestern (Seven Proud Sisters) by Reinhard Dietrich shows a miniature of a fountain sculpture created in 1970. This fountain, entitled Sieben stolze Schwestern küsst das eine Meer (Seven Proud Sisters Kissing the One Sea), can be found near the Kröpeliner Tor in Rostock's urban space.
