The Kunsthalle Rostock opens

With the opening of the 3. Biennale der Ostseestaaten in the newly built Kunsthalle Rostock, the exhibition's increased importance was also reflected in the cityscape. The new museum building, which found its location in a new residential area outside the old town, is to this day an example of structural clarity and practicality of a small museum building.

For the first time, the name of the show was changed to Biennale of the Baltic States to express the desire for state recognition of the GDR in this detail as well. This new naming remained in place until the 6th Biennale in 1975.

In the preface to the catalogue of the third Biennale, a plea was made for openness to artistic styles. At the same time, however, it emphasised the need for a "comprehensible and communicative language of works if art is to have an influence on social processes". In the texts of the country collections, there were various attempts to position themselves on the demanded priority of realistic works. The contribution to the Finnish collection came from the painter Kaarlo Koroma, who donated one of his abstract still lifes to the Kunsthalle in 1970. His text described the Finnish selection and emphasised the diversity of manifestations of figurative directions. The preface of the Federal Republic called on all artists to enter society, then a new social content would change the form of art. Diter Rot, whose real name is Dieter Roth, originally from the Federal Republic but living in Iceland, showed his cocoa and sausage prints in 1969 as part of the Icelandic selection.
