Exhibition in the Kunsthalle Rostock about the works of danish artist Jørgen Buch and his ties to the art world of the GDR.

Danish artist Jørgen Buch (1943-2021) was close to the art world of the GDR. After making his debut on the 3. Biennale der Ostseestaaten in 1969, he had his first solo exhibitions as an artist in Ahrenshoop and Rostock (1970). As a realist painter with left-political convictions he studied at art academies in Leningrad and Berlin-Weisensee in the 1970s. His works like the strong criticism of American society in Black and White (1977), in which a Ku Klux Klan figure tramples a black body to the ground against the background of the Statue of Liberty, were required for the Gallery of Nordic art in the Kunsthalle Rostock: a unique collection from abroad in the only newly-built art museum in the GDR. The new exhibition in the Kunsthalle Rostock presents the artist’s work in Denmark and the GDR. A selection of Danish works from the collection is also on show as “Dansk kunst - dänische Positionen aus der Sammlung der Kunsthalle Rostock”.  A catalogue with texts by Danish and German art historians will be published for the exhibition.
