With the Neue Berliner Galerie - Zentrum für Kunstausstellung der DDR an institution was founded on August 1, 1973, which had the task of conceiving and organizing exhibitions of foreign artists within the GDR as well as conceiving, organizing and carrying out exhibitions of artists from the GDR abroad. The ZfK replaced the intermist Ausstellungsgruppe and remained in effect until the end of the GDR. From 1974, the name was simply the Zentrum für Kunstausstellungen der DDR. In addition to the Neue Berliner Galerie in Bodestraße 1-3, the Galerie am Weidendamm in Friedrichstraße 103 in Berlin and the Galerie Rähnitzgasse in Rähnitzgasse 8 in Dresden later functioned as exhibition locations of the ZfK.
Since 1977, the ZfK published the magazine Mitteilungen, where the work of the institution, individual exhibitions and the works of selected international artists were presented.
