Architectural transfer between Cuba and the GDR
- 1960
In 1960, the first agreement on trade and financial loans was concluded between the GDR and Cuba. In the following years, the GDR planned various construction projects in Cuba, including several cement plants. Some planners and architects from GDR companies traveled to Cuba for the work, and on a political level, the projects were important for strengthening the relationship between the socialist "brother states." Juliane Richter examines this architectural transfer against its historical economic-political background and in the context of international socialist networks. She is a doctoral student in the research group "Identity and Heritage" at the Bauhaus University Weimar. On the website of "Identity and Heritage" there is a more detailed description of her dissertation project and her bio: https://www.identitaet-und-erbe.org/personen/juliane-richter/.
Juliane Richter recently published an article on the topic, “A ‚complicated political-ideological situation‘. Transfering a cement plant from Dessau/GDR to Nuevitas/Cuba”, ABE Journal [Online], 19 | 2021, Online since 9. May 2022, 2022.
