"Tropenbau" from Weimar
- 1985
In 1985, the „Wissenschaftsbereich Tropen- und Auslandsbau” ("Scientific Department of Tropical and Foreign Construction") was founded at the University of Architecture and Building (HAB) in Weimar. It was intended to serve the education and training of architects and building practitioners who were preparing for work assignments in tropical climates. The model for the scientific department was the Institute for Tropical Construction, which the architect Georg Lippsmeier (1923-1991) had established in Starnberg in West-Germany. In Weimar, courses on technical, economic and cultural aspects of building in the Global South were held, as well as international design seminars and excursions lasting several days. In the first video, art historian Juliane Richter introduces the activities of the department. In the second video, she discusses the work of the science department with engineer Hans-Ulrich Mönnig, who held the Chair of Tropical and International Construction from 1986-1989 and also became rector of the HAB in 1989.
