The painter Klaus Killisch talks in an interview about international influences during his studies at the Weißensee School of Art in the mid-1980s. Killisch refers, among other things, to personal encounters in East Berlin, for example in the workshop of the ceramist Wilfriede Maaß. In addition to direct personal contacts with visitors in the GDR, the influence of music and pop culture on Klaus Killisch's artistic work becomes apparent in the conversation in his studio in Berlin-Pankow. The GDR's borders could be crossed by various media; music, films and books were passed on or actively consumed in accessible Eastern European countries. International "Zeitgeist" had an influence on the visual arts, interesting fragments were made fruitful for one's own practice.
Killisch describes the exhibition "Zwischenspiele" (Interludes), which took place in 1989 in the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in West Berlin, as an exciting overview of the scene in the GDR in the course of the 1980s. His visit to the exhibition as a participating artist fell on 9 November 1989; Killisch thus experienced the fall of the Wall on the return journey of a day trip from West Berlin.
