Intergrafik 1965

Topic: Exhibitions
Periods:
  • 1965
In 1965, the GDR hosted the Intergrafik for the first time, an exhibition and event that was intended to provide an insight into current graphic work worldwide.

Intergrafik 1965 represents the first of nine international presentation and meeting platforms on the subject of graphic art between 1965 and 1990 in the GDR. Initially held every two years, from 1967 onwards every three years, it can be understood as a continuous striving for diplomatic recognition on an international level.
Intergrafik opened in 1965 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Works by 420 artists from 21 European, Asian and American countries were presented. The show was accompanied by an international art-scholarly symposium, which remained firmly anchored with Intergrafik in the years to come.
An exhibition catalog was published for each of the Biennale/Triennale organized by the central executive committee of Verband Bildender Künstler der DDR (VBK). The extensive source material is now kept in the Archive of Akademie der Künste in Berlin.
