An internship at the Waldenburg ceramics workshop

In 1979, Said Teryaqui, Abdullah Arab, Nawal Iskandarani, and Adnan Bustani arrived in Waldenburg, Saxony, from different countries. They had been sent as a delegation by Samed, the economic arm of the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization), to further their education in the field of ceramics. The organization and the GDR maintained political relations and had recently concluded a cultural agreement.
On this basis, an internship was arranged at the Waldenburg ceramics workshop, supervised by ceramicist Peter Tauscher. Over a period of six months, the participants were introduced to all areas of the workshop with the assistance of an interpreter and received a certificate upon completion. To conclude the program, a sales exhibition was organized at the Berlin gallery of the Staatlicher Kunsthandel.
In an interview with Art in Networks, Said Teryaqui recalls his internship. At the time, he was offered a six-month extension of his internship to deepen his knowledge. Back in Beirut, however, it was not possible to set up a ceramics workshop at Samed for financial reasons, which meant that Said Teryaqui ultimately had no regular opportunity to apply what he had learned. Nevertheless, he did produce some ceramic works over time. Said Teryaqui also studied fine arts in the 1980s.
