In September 1961 an exhibition of works by the Ghanaian artist Kofi Antubam (1922–1964) was opened at the Internationales Ausstellungszentrum on Friedrichstraße in East Berlin.

The international exhibition centre was run by the Liga für Völkerfreundschaft of the GDR betrieben. Antubam's exhibition contained mostly small sculptures and watercolor paintings as well as models of reliefs he had designed for the parliament building in Accra. For the opening, Antubam traveled to East Berlin and met with local culture professionals. Some GDR newspapers discussed the exhibition extensively, especially with regard to its cultural political background. Ghana had become independent from British colonial rule in 1957 and, just before the exhibition opened, it had recognised the GDR as a sovereign state. For instance, the Neue Zeit published a report on the exhibition on 12 September 1961 titled "Symbols of Hope, Strength and Wisdom" (original: "Symbole der Hoffnung, Stärke und Weisheit"), and on 19 September 1961 the newspaper featured an article on Kofi Antumbam's life and work under the title "The liberated man and the art" (original: "Der befreite Mensch und die Kunst").

The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue: Kunst aus Ghana. Kofi Antubam, edited by the Deutsch-Afrikanische Gesellschaft der DDR, Berlin 1961.
