In 1988, the Fotogalerie Friedrichshain at Helsingforser Platz in East Berlin showed an exhibition with photographs by the German-Chinese artist Eva Siao (1911–2001, née Eva Sandberg) under the title Eva Siao. China - Mein Traum, meine Wirklichkeit. In her images Siao documented the Chinese revolution and the early years of the People's Republic of China. She was married to the Chinese writer Emi Siao and eventually adopted Chinese citizenship. Her biography was the subject of the film China – mein Traum, mein Leben – EVA SIAO – ein Porträt (1990) by the filmmaker Gitta Nickel, who had directed movies and documentaries in the GDR.

The catalogue page shows a black-and-white photo of construction works on Tien'anmen square. Several men are sculpting stone blocks.
The exhibition was accompanied by the Catalogue Eva Siao: China - Mein Traum, meine Wirklichkeit, edited by the Ministerium für Kultur der DDR, Berlin 1988.
