The artist Teresa Casanueva (born 1963) came to study textile arts at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle in 1985. In her fourth year at the art academy, Teresa Casanueva was confronted with a decision that was significant for her due to the political changes in the GDR: official representatives of her country clearly urged her to return to Cuba. However, Burg Giebichenstein was able to ensure that the exchange students' scholarships were carried on by the Federal Republic. The artist and many of her fellow students decided against returning to their homeland. Despite massive political pressure at times and the resulting statelessness, she finished her studies in Halle. Casanueva now lives and works in Berlin. During the interview in her studio on 18.05.2022, her works from her student days at the end of the 1980s can be seen in the background.
